The series cover for Tales of the Kashallans is consistent for every title: there's a striking stylized image of an alien being called a khutani, which you could be forgiven for guessing was an image of some kind of dragon, if you hadn't read any of the books. Above this being appears the title for this volume in the series, such as Blood Magic's Snare, and Tales of the Kashallans Book 6. Below the alien being is the author's name, Celu Amberstone. That pattern of words and stylized alien is consistent throughout the series Tales of the Kashallans, making them recognizable at a glance.
But one thing is not so consistent for these cover images, and that's the colour. The shade of dark green used for book covers in this series appears very well on computer screens and cell phones or tablets. But when we released the first books in this series as paperbacks, it soon became apparent that this shade of dark green was almost black on a printed cover! Too dark, at any rate, to be easily told from black or from the dark brown of another series released by Kashallan Press, the Rituals nonfiction series.
Luckily, our intrepid cover designer was able to improve the situation. Covers in the series Tales of the Kashallans are now printed in a brighter green than the first few copies were. They're still dark green, but it's easier to tell this series from the Rituals nonfiction series, which has covers in a ruddy brown, warmer than the dark brown previously used.
If you're one of the few people who, as you acquire paperback copies of books from Tales of the Kashallans series, finds the first few paperbacks are a darker colour than the later ones, that's not a bad thing. As a fan of the series from the beginning, you have a reminder right there in your collection that Kashallan Press is making updates in real time to improve production of these books.
And besides, the ruddy, warm brown of the Rituals series looks awesome!
